Gi Gi is a 12 year being brought up by her older sister. Their mother was killed in a trailer park fire, while Gi Gi was still a baby.

They win a huge prize in a recipe contest and move from their trailer park to Long Island New York so that Gi Gi can attend a better school.

The story opens when Gi Gi is about to start at the new school. There are new friends, new challenges, and a new way of living to be taken in. Much has changed in their lives and much more will change throughout the book.

I loved this book. There are so many surprising twists and turns and you follow along every inch of the way. Deep, rich characters, who learn and grow through the course of the story, abound.

I would highly recommend this book for middle grade readers. The protagonist is a girl but there are many male characters as well, so it’s a book for everybody.

The culture is very USA, and may not be real for children in other cultures, but it would give anyone an insight into layers within US society.

And it’s sprinkled with recipes as well.
